The GDR had to steadily reduce its coal imports, as the Soviet Union’s influence effectively came to an end, particularly due to the oil crisis and the Soviet economic crisis of 1981–82. The GDR turned to diesel relatively early on (development gained momentum in the mid-1950s), but was forced by the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance to import heavy diesel locomotives (reportedly over 2,000 hp) from the Soviet Union (and, in the case of the Br 119, from Romania). Consequently, steam locomotives were further developed, as there was no need to import them. Due to rising coal and fuel prices, the GDR began large-scale electrification in the early 1980s, a process that came to an end with the fall of the Berlin Wall.
